Green Room Drabble...

The Author returned to her computer at the appointed time to find a curious scene in her Green Room: the sofa and all but three of the chairs had been rearranged around the television, and every seat was occupied by an engrossed man in uniform.  Caroline, Eleanor and Elizabeth, looking bored out of their minds, occupied the few remaining chairs and were facing away from the TV.  Elizabeth looked up at The Author’s entrance.

“Good Lord.  I can’t believe they expect us to think the ship’s leaving that kind of a wake when the sails are completely slack.  It’s not like it’s heeling…”  grumbled James, pointing at the screen.

“Please.. we’re begging you..”  said Elizabeth.

“Well, what do you expect?  They were trying to use an octant as a sextant in that other scene…” replied Andrew.

Seething at this interruption, Elizabeth looked back at The Author and continued.  “PLEASE take “Master and Commander” out of the DVD collection.  This is the third time today.”

Ah.  I hadn’t thought of that… they haven’t found the Hornblower series yet, have they?

            “The WHAT?” asked Caroline.

Em.  Never mind.  Look… said The Author, I’ll give you some counter-ammunition.  And three DVD sets appeared in Elizabeth’s lap.

“’Pride and Prejudice?’  ‘Sense and Sensibility?’  ‘Little Women?’”  Elizabeth gave The Author a skeptical stare.

Try them out tomorrow.  Trust me on this.

You know, I was just thinking about this the other day as I was driving down the highway - if people who know a lot about these ships have trouble sitting through POTC because of all the botched details. It's funny how greater knowledge of something can decrease one's enjoyment. It happens to me with the (very few) subjects I know enough about for it to be distracting.

(And I'll have them know that "Master and Commander" is *good* compared to most films about the age of sail!)

Oh, I know.. I didn't catch either of those things. I searched the nitpicking websites. :)

For me, it very much depends. If it's a good movie, I can usually overlook an awful lot, but the minute I start getting bored, I start counting portholes and looking at clothing details.

One of the mistakes that drove me BATSHIT in an otherwise good movie was that scene in "Amistad" where they put their gloves on BEFORE eating. I don't know why, but I found that really jarring.

(Not that I don't still watch "Amistad," but it annoys me anyway.)

You know what gets me every time? Esterella with the warming pan. Not just whytf do they have one? but WTF ARE YOU DOING? THEy'RE FOR WARMING THE SHEETS BEFORE USE AND YOU TAKE IT OUT BEFORE THE SLEEPER GETS IN! ARE YOU TRYING TO GIVE YOUR MISTRESS 2ND DEGREE BURNS OR WHAT?

It's the '1669; not a good year for music...' thing all over again.

(I'm doing a kind of survey of GreenRoomFic, in case you were wondering)

This is why there are no DVDs allowed in my green room. I would never, ever hear the end of it.

Maybe just the modern naval movies? It would be hard for them to nitpick on a nuclear submarine... :)

(Can I just say that "The Hunt For Red October" totally rocks? I have it on right now. "Yer average Russkie, son, don't take a dump without a plan...")

This is true. I have this mental image of James sitting on my couch, leaning forward and watching 'The Hunt For Red October' with this rapt, awe-struck, little-boy-at-Disneyland kind of look on his face: "Wow!"

Hmmmm. Maybe if I stuck to the moderns. Yeah.

Definitely!

-------
"What, *under* water?"
"Yep."
"Completely submerged?"
"Yes."
"For MONTHS?"
"As long as they've got food and the crew doesn't go crazy."
-------

Have you ever seen pictures of The Turtle? Oh, hell to the no. And the Hunley is also Right. Out.

Sorry to butt in here, but can I just say OMG, I watch "The Hunt for Red October" at least a couple times a year. Such a great movie, and I don't even give a rat's ass about submarines.

"Shome thingsh in here don't react well to bulletsh..."

Definitely. :)

Have you seen "K-19: The Widowmaker?" You wouldn't think that a submarine movie could make you cry, but there's this scene in there where I end up bawling like a baby...

[identity profile] rexluscus.livejournal.com 2007-09-15 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha! It's the magic of Sean Connery that somehow we accept that he's speaking with a Russian accent. :) And no, I haven't. Is that the Harrison Ford one?

[identity profile] concertigrossi.livejournal.com 2007-09-16 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep! And Liam Neeson. It's very good... not as good as Red October, but still good.

Do you want to read about the scene that makes me cry, or would you rather not see spoilers? :)

Actualy, if you don't mind, I think I might see it. I got a sudden submarine inspiration and watched "Red October" yesterday after all. So K-19 is going on my Netflix queue. :)
