From The Totally Useless History of the World by Ian Crofton, entry from the year 1777:
Pirates show their respect for scholarship (12 December): Death of the Swiss Scholar and scientist, Albrecht von Haller. Such was his great reputation during his lifetime that a case of books addressed to him, seized by pirates from a ship, was forwarded by them to the great professor as soon as they made port.
There is so totally a story in there somewhere.
