She shot him a look of disbelief, then reconsidered. “Do you know what they say, in Delhi? It’s an accepted fact that no one goes out in the noonday sun save mad dogs and Englishmen.”
He threw his head back and laughed, and her breath caught in her throat. His eyes sparkled so, and at least a decade rolled back off his face. The change was so dramatic that she wondered, for a second, if he was younger than she.
He noticed her surprise and was about to comment on it, but she covered quickly. “You laughed. I had no proof, but I was sure it must be possible.”
“It’s a pity, then, that there are no witnesses, for you will never be believed.”
