Some good news..

My friend from high school, Yuko, is Ok. She's been living in a blackout zone for four days, but she's ok.

Seconded.

My college friend Yuriko has actually just moved back to Sheffield to be with her boyfriend (who she met while we were there.) Her family are all from Tokyo, I think... I've not heard anything from her in person.

I suddenly realised just before I went out to the drama group where I help out on Monday evenings that one of the children there is from Japan (or first-generation migrant- she has a Derbyshire accent); however, the group leader asked her right away and she says her whole family are in a totally different part of the country.

I know this sort of thing doesn't make anything better. But I think one does try to make sense of it by just tracking known individuals. (I know two couples in Christchurch as well; one were okay, the other two their roof fell in- while the guy was on the phone to his parents in England, bizarrely- but they were okay, they even put a tarpaulin over it and moved back in within the week.)
