If you think about it, what the Career districts are doing makes a lot of sense. Training up Tributes to volunteer means that 1) you can control who gets chosen (something tells me that there's hell to pay for Career Tributes who are expected to volunteer but don't), 2) the kids who actually do get sent have a pretty good chance of winning, 3) you avoid the whole 12-year-old-in-the-arena thing, and 4) you can get rid of troublemakers pretty easily (bad grades? bad attitude? general mischief-making? Welcome to Tribute school!)

There are some fic ideas there...

EDIT: So if you think about it, the Career districts are the first to exert some measure of control against the Capitol, albeit in a backhanded sort of way. And the Gamemakers probably turn a blind eye because it makes for a better show...

I have a plotbunny.

Right, so I'm late to the whole "Hunger Games" thing. I read the books this past weekend, and they were good. I'm already quite keen for the movie this weekend.

And so, I find myself wondering...

Cut for Spoilers )

I find myself also wondering if I could pull a fic like that off..

Question...

Feb. 1st, 2012 08:15 pm
I could bore you with the details of my trials and travails of the last three months, but I can't stomach the rehash. I can't even make the oft-broken promise that I'll post more often. Let's just say it's been a growth opportunity and leave it at that.

But I've got a question:

What are some good literary examples of a three-dimensional racist/sexist/homophobic/anti-semitic character?

Because that's quite a trick, these days, right? I just read "The Help," and the main antagonist is an almost cartoonish caricature. All she lacks is a Snidely Whiplash mustache. But, while there certainly are Snidely Whiplashes in the world, they couldn't have driven the Holocaust or the Jim Crow laws without the support of the majority of ordinary people.

How do you accurately portray the banality of evil?

Dr. Who

Dear Mr. Gaiman,

That was, in fact, a VERY good episode of Dr. Who. Am now contemplating a TARDIS costume for the next con I attend. Mind you, if I hadn't already known you wrote it, I would've guessed because it was very much NEIL GAIMAN!

However, did you stop to think about all the fic that this will unleash across the Internet? Has the first porn of this shown up yet? I would be surprised if it hadn't.

This isn't a bad thing, of course, because some of the fic will be good. I just hope that, when you release fandom catnip into the wild, you know what you're doing. :)

Love,

Me

Please God let it all be ok.
My friend from high school, Yuko, is Ok. She's been living in a blackout zone for four days, but she's ok.
Fandom is doing a relief auction for the multiple catastrophes in Japan.

My offering is here.

Basically, I'll write anything I've written before, except Avatar (I just finished a big Avatar fic), plus Sherlock, Dr Who, Downton Abbey, Aubrey/Maturin and the Jossverse. Also, my life is chaotic. The fic WILL get done, but not necessarily speedily.

I'm strongly suspecting I may have missed messages in the recent Gmail brouhaha... if you've sent something to me in the last 72 hours and I haven't replied, please send again...
Pick a paragraph (or any passage between... let's say 200 and 600 words) from anything I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

Sherlock..

FINALLY got to finish watching it. The BBC are a bunch of bastards.

So, two questions:

1) There's a second series, yes? Tell me there's more....

2) I'm not even going to ask if there's slash or not, because that's a stupid question, but is there good slash? (Seriously, that last scene? OMG shipper catnip. I mean, you don't even have to TRY. It's just... if I see heteronormative schmoop with mpreg on this one, I may just lose my few remaining tattered shreds of faith in humanity.)

The words, they fail.
Was nonexistent. Seriously, I wrote NOTHING.

Now, it was not an unproductive year. I unpacked all our belongings. I cleaned out the storage unit. We started renovating the house. I got a job. I got a better job. I passed the A+ exam.

BUT.

No writing. I want that to be different this year. I'm almost scared to make a concrete plan, as that seems to be putting a big sign on my back that says, "Kick me, Universe! Go on, do it!"

So how about this?

These are my goals:

To finish what's shaping up to be the world's most overdue Help Haiti fic.
To finish the Big Fic before the DVD of the fourth Pirates movie comes out.

We'll see what happens. At least I have the new version of Scrivener to play with. Here's to a saner 2011.
