[livejournal.com profile] oneiriad and I were right!

Seriously, I was just kidding when I joked that the MPAA made them cut out the tail-linking bit because it was too explicit for a PG-13, but it turns out that the sex scene was cut for the ratings:

If you sync to your banshee and you’re syncing to a tree, why not sync into a person? I almost feel like you’ll have the most amazing orgasm, I guess. It was a very funny scene to shoot because there were so many technical things that sometimes you have to keep in mind that paying attention to all those might disrupt the fluidity of how a scene is supposed to take place.

And because Jim was shooting for a PG-13 rating, we couldn’t move in certain directions. The motion would look a little too past the PG-13 rating standards. So it was really funny for Sam and me. We had a lot of giggles there.

I lol'ed. A lot.

Have you gone to see "Avatar" yet? You really should. On the biggest screen you can conveniently get to.

I'm still left wondering why pony-tail-linking would make it too explicit. Have an intertwining mini-tentacles shot and then a bit of a psychedelic lightshow or something. I mean, this is a completely alien species - for all we know, they don't even associate actual insert tap a into slot b intercourse with sex and orgasms - maybe that's the linking. Maybe intercourse is only something they do when babies are wanted, and kind of boring, really... I was reading the tvtropes page about Avatar and it mentioned something about their excellent population control, which would be something you could explain that way...

Of course, if mind-linking = sex if with another na'vi, is mindlinking with non-na'vi = bestiality (or plantality?)? Which is a whole other Pandora's box...

I foresee a fandom that has loads of fun with outrageous ideas :-)

They said the motions would be too suggestive or something. That's the MPAA for it.

The book says that the whole queue-linking thing is unrelated to reproduction

Srsly. :)

$300 million dollar movie. They're leaving no merchandising stone unturned. :)

Here it is. Somehow, it managed to show up on my doorstop yesterday. Not sure how that happened...

Of course not - no stone, no pebble, no random piece of gravel. :-)

So, you have the big book of Pandora beasties, do you. So, would that book happen to have a name for, say, those dragonfly-lizard-helicopter-thingies, for instance? :-)

Fan Lizard. No Na'vi name given. :)

I think I am going to cheerfully misunderstand the name in an extremely obvious and kind of predictable way :-)

Alas, I don't seem to have any actual ideas for a story. Besides, I'm the type that prefers to have seen a movie a few times and having the dvd around for last-minute fact-checking before writing anything in a fandom...

HAHA, we went to see this today and at one point my sister leaned over and said "I bet they do the ponytail thing for sex" and I joked back "Nah, that wouldn't be PG-rated."

HA!

What did you think of it?

I should probably post a review, maybe. I liked it, visually and somewhat for the storytelling. I do wish the villains had been more nuanced and sympathetic, but Cameron has a penchant for portraying villainy as flatly evil. I mean, contrast the death of the general in "Avatar" with the death of either Barbossa or Davy Jones - neither of the latter got cheers. (Though Beckett and Mercer were both sons of bitches, I suppose. *G*)
