Thanks, but I think I have to let that chunk stew for a little longer. It's been puked out into the word-processor (in the Rough Draft) I posted, so it at least exists.

I avoid small talk whenever possible, but in this case, I have to. The dialogue in the scene where James and Andrew are introduced to Caroline has all the spontaneity of a Kabuki drama, but I need to include it because it's full of first impressions. The INNER dialogue is easy, but the external HURTS.

Maybe a little more detailed than that. :) Besides, there's lots of good stuff that can be expressed about the nature of their relationship at the beginning. It just all has to be done on the framework of the ordinary.

And she would come close to slapping him if he called her "Miss Caroline." It's "Lady Chalfont" right up until the moment he professes his undying love... :)

Shouldn't real small talk- that is, what doesn't connect to anything that's going on- get kept truly to a minimum anyway? (That's your excuse)

The point of the scene was the subtext... it was one of those scenes where someone is being introduced to the group.

But it did mean that there had to be a small-talk overlay on the whole thing. :)
