Summary:
The fate of the world sometimes hangs on the flip of a coin, the want of a nail, or the choice of an ally. From that point on, the timelines diverge and can, on occasion, end up in very different places.
In this 'verse, at the fateful moment, Loki didn't choose Hawkeye...

Good '30s - '40s resources
I really owe my friend Jep for helping me with this - she's quite expert on the period, and I've been allergic to 20th century history until fairly recently. Here are some of the links she's recommended.
Life Magazine: All the editions of Life magazine, digitized, starting with the first issue in 1935. See the articles, reader reactions, advertisements and photographs. Here's a particularly useful article on juvenile delinquency during wartime, referencing VD, marijuana use and teenaged girls considering it their patriotic duty to have sex with soldiers. Seriously.
Radio Programs from the Internet Archive: Too many to list. Check out '30s and '40s era news broadcasts and radio dramas. I've downloaded a bunch of "Cavalcade of America" and some episodes of the Great Gildersleeve.
Pre-Hays Code movies help, too, as they're at least a bit more realistic in terms of Victorianesque behavior (or lack thereof. Check out "Gold Diggers of 1933," for example.)
And remember that the Hays Code never applied to the theater, so you've got stuff like Noel Coward's "The Vortex," which deals with a young cocaine-addicted, gay composer as he's dealing with his total cougar of a mother.
Seriously.
It's tricky, but I think I'm finally starting to get a grasp on the extent to which neo-Victorian prudery really was a function of the 1950s and early 1960s.

As always, I am nothing without my excellent beta-readers Rex Luscus, Jep, Ishymaria and Pink Siamese. I owe them for their sage advice, their unfailing moral support, and their willingness to put up with random bits of headcanon dropped into their inboxes at any given time. Thanks, guys, I really, really appreciate it.
The vast majority of this was written before the Blu-Ray came out, without having seen the deleted scenes and before the recent Announcement of Great Import, so I can almost guarantee bits will be Jossed. Given that this is based on a movie series based on some Marvel comic books, I will argue that all of it is 100% canon-compliant, just in a slightly different universe. :)

COULSON LIVES!
AUGH!
Because you thought of this before I did.
Curse you. :)
If you don't want to click through, folks, Devil's Adequate quite correctly points out that what we are dealing with here is... wait for it...
.
... Schrödinger’s Coulson.
Is he alive? Is he dead? We don't know!
Avengers
1) Steve Rogers will not notice that the Twin Towers aren't there anymore.
2) Brooklyn =/= the Bronx =/= Manhattan =/= Queens. There are 28,000 people per square mile in NYC: these distinctions are important.
3) Slash Steve Rogers with whomever you please (in fact, please do!) but for God's sake, realize you're going to have to put some work into it. He got frozen in 1943, the Kinsey report doesn't come out until 1948. Dude is going to have some issues with the idea.
4) New Mexico is big, this is true. I have driven through lots and lots of it. It's huge, and there's a whole lotta nothing. (Also, thank you for not thinking you need a passport to get there.) However, if you drive 500 miles straight in any direction, you will likely no longer be in New Mexico.
5) The 1960s did not invent the drug culture. Just because Steve is as squeaky clean as they come doesn't mean he won't know what marijuana is. For example:
See what I mean?
Avengers, II
I am badly, badly fan-bit on this one.
I've been rewatching the other movies (need to get Hulk), and I may actually go see the Avengers again this weekend.
Of course, I'm totally in thrall to Phil "TOTALLY NOT DEAD" Coulson, but Banner? OMG. The potential there! And the temporal problems of Captain America? There's a lot of red meat there.
Also, Darcy from "Thor" is growing on me. Like a fungus.
I only wish this were mine:
"Fifty Shades of Grey" OMG.
I weep for civilization.
